EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured in 1886, Prince Alexander of Bulgaria, aged 29, is welcomed back to Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, after being rescued from his abductors. The prince had been held captive in Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire's capital, following the signing of the Congress of Berlin, which ended the Russo-Turkish War and redrew the borders of Europe. The Bulgarian people, longing for their liberator and leader, eagerly awaited his return. Despite the joyous occasion, this was not the first time Prince Alexander had been deposed. He had previously abdicated voluntarily in 1881, following the assassination of his father, Prince Alexander II, and the subsequent political instability. This time, however, his return was a triumphant one, as Bulgarian forces, led by General Stefan Stambolov, had successfully rescued him from his captors. The crowd that gathered in Sofia to welcome the prince back was a testament to the deep affection and loyalty of the Bulgarian people towards their leader. The event marked a significant moment in Bulgarian history, as the country continued to navigate its path towards independence and self-governance. Despite the jubilation, Prince Alexander's time on the Bulgarian throne would be short-lived once again. In 1887, he abdicated voluntarily for a second time, citing health reasons. This decision paved the way for the election of Ferdinand Saxe-Coburg and Gotha as the new prince of Bulgaria, who would go on to rule until 1918. This photograph, taken during this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history, captures the spirit of hope and unity that defined the Bulgarian people during a time of political upheaval and uncertainty.
