10th 1802 1859 Alexander Baronet Chief Cockburn Judges Jurist Justice L Aw

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Sir Alexander James Edmund Cockburn, 10th Baronet, in the prime of his illustrious career as Lord Chief Justice of England. Born on March 1, 1802, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Cockburn was educated at the University of Edinburgh before embarking on a legal career in England. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1826 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Queen's Counsel in 1841. In 1859, Cockburn was appointed Lord Chief Justice of England, a position he held until his retirement in 1880. During his tenure, he presided over numerous high-profile cases, including the trial of the Chartists in 1848 and the famous "Pig-Tail Riots" case in 1857. His judgments were known for their clarity, fairness, and wit, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers and the public. Despite his Scottish birth, Cockburn was a passionate and dedicated Englishman, and he played a significant role in shaping the English legal system. He was knighted in 1859 and created a baronet in 1866. Upon his retirement in 1880, he was succeeded as Lord Chief Justice by his son, Frederick Cockburn. This photograph, taken during Cockburn's time as Lord Chief Justice, captures the stern yet thoughtful expression on his face, reflecting the gravity of the responsibilities he bore as the head of the English judiciary. The image is a testament to Cockburn's enduring legacy as one of the greatest jurists in British history.
