EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Battle of Plevna, a turning point in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. The image shows Alexander Johan Cuza, the King of Romania and commander of the Russian forces, intently watching the action unfold as the Turkish army, led by Osman Pasha, begins its retreat. The Battle of Plevna, which took place from July to December 1877, saw the Russian forces, numbering around 80,000, attempting to take the fortified city of Plevna, held by the Turks with a garrison of around 30,000. The battle was a fierce and protracted one, with both sides suffering heavy losses. The Russian forces, despite their superior numbers and resources, were unable to breach the Turkish defenses. However, in December 1877, the Russian forces, under the command of General Gourko, launched a massive assault on the Turkish positions. The Turkish forces, weakened by hunger and disease, were unable to withstand the Russian onslaught. Osman Pasha, realizing the futility of further resistance, ordered a retreat. In this photograph, King Alexander, dressed in military uniform and wearing a fur hat, is seen observing the final stages of the battle from a hill overlooking the battlefield. His intense gaze and clenched fist speak volumes about the determination and resolve of the Russian forces to secure a victory. The defeat of the Turkish army at Plevna marked a significant milestone in the Russo-Turkish War, paving the way for the eventual defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the liberation of Bulgaria. This historical photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the fate of empires hung in the balance and great leaders like Alexander Cuza shaped the course of history.
