Alder Flies Sialis

EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful 19th century print captures the intricate details of the Alder Fly, specifically the male (Sialis lutaria, species 11) and female (Sialis lutaria, species 14) in their natural habitat. The Alder Fly, also known as the Alder Fly or May Fly, is an insect belonging to the order Megaloptera and the family Sialidae. These flies are characterized by their long, slender bodies and large, transparent wings. The male Alder Fly, depicted on the left, can be identified by its distinctive, elongated and slender abdomen, broad thorax, and large, feathery antennae. The female, on the right, is larger and more robust, with a rounder abdomen and shorter antennae. Both genders have large, compound eyes and three pairs of legs. The Alder Fly is named for its preference for living in or near alder trees, which is where they lay their eggs. The larvae of the Alder Fly are aquatic and live in fast-flowing streams and rivers, feeding on organic matter. After several instar stages, the larvae transform into pupae, which eventually hatch into adults. The adults have a short lifespan, typically only a few days, during which they mate and lay their eggs. This exquisite print provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the past, showcasing the delicate beauty of the Alder Fly in its intricate detail. The intricate lines and shading used in the print bring the insects to life, making it a captivating addition to any collection of natural history prints.
