EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Albert Medal, a prestigious award established by a Royal Warrant on March 7, 1866. The medal was initially introduced to recognize acts of bravery at sea. However, two classes of the medal were created by a subsequent warrant in 1867. In 1877, the Albert Medal underwent an important alteration, extending its eligibility to those who saved lives on land. The Albert Medal is named after Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, who was deeply involved in the foundation of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The medal's design features a profile of Prince Albert on the obverse, while the reverse displays a mermaid holding a lifebuoy and a shipwrecked sailor. The heraldic motto "For Life and Merit" encircles the image. The Albert Medal was considered a high honor, ranking just below the Victoria Cross, and was awarded to both civilians and military personnel. The medal's introduction marked a significant milestone in recognizing acts of heroism on land and at sea, paving the way for other decorations to follow suit. This beautiful print serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Albert Medal and the brave individuals who have been honored with it.
