1875 Allied Belgian Brussels Return Victory Albert

EDITORS COMMENTS
November 22, 1918: A Triumphant Homecoming for King Albert I of Belgium In this historic photograph, King Albert I of Belgium, resplendent in his military uniform, makes his triumphant return to Brussels on November 22, 1918. The First World War had ended just weeks prior, and the Allied victory brought an end to the long occupation of Belgium by German forces. The Belgian people, who had endured years of hardship and suffering, eagerly awaited their monarch's return to lead them into a new era of peace and reconstruction. Born on August 8, 1875, Albert I ascended to the throne in 1909 following the death of his father, King Leopold II. A man of great courage and determination, Albert I led his country through the darkest days of the war, refusing to be intimidated by the German occupiers. He and his family were forced to flee to exile in the Netherlands, but they never lost hope that one day they would be able to return to their homeland. As the Allied forces pushed the Germans back towards the Rhine, the moment finally arrived for King Albert I to make his way back to Brussels. The city was in a state of jubilation as the monarch and his family arrived, greeted by cheering crowds and a hero's welcome. The photograph captures a proud and determined Albert I, his eyes fixed on the future as he begins the procession through the streets of Brussels to his palace. The end of the war marked a new beginning for Belgium, and King Albert I was instrumental in leading his country towards a brighter future.
