EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Alaric I, King of the Visigoths (370-410 AD). This evocative image depicts Alaric I, the renowned King of the Visigoths, who ruled from 395 to 410 AD. Born around 370 AD, Alaric began his reign as an elected king of the Visigoths, a Germanic people originally from Eastern Europe, who had been settled in the Roman province of Hispania (modern-day Spain) since the late 3rd century AD. In 401 AD, Alaric led his army out of Spain and invaded Italy, marking the beginning of the end for the Western Roman Empire. The invasion was a significant turning point in European history, as it marked the first time a Germanic people had successfully conquered the Roman heartland. The Visigoths ravaged Italy for three years, sacking Rome itself in 402 AD. During this time, Alaric demanded a large ransom from the Romans in exchange for sparing the city. The payment was eventually made, but Alaric's forces continued to plunder the Italian peninsula. In 410 AD, Alaric and his army were engaged in a battle with the Romans near the town of Ravenna. Despite initial successes, Alaric was ultimately killed in the fighting. His death marked the end of the Visigothic invasion of Italy and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Europe. Alaric I's reign and the Visigothic invasion of Italy are significant moments in the history of both the Germanic peoples and the Western Roman Empire. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the complex and often tumultuous relationship between these two civilizations during the late antique period. Mary Evans Picture Library is proud to offer this historical image for research and educational purposes. It is an essential resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the rich and complex history of Europe during the late antique period.
