Peacock, Historiae Animalium, 16th Century
Peacock, Historiae Animalium, 16th Century Gesner believes that the peacock was domesticated in very ancient times, noting that the Greeks imported them from barbarian tribes. The Romans considered them rare, but he claims that they were not difficult to find in his time. Historiae Animalium (Studies on Animals) is considered to be the first modern zoological work. This first attempt to describe many of the animals accurately is illustrated with hand-colored woodcuts drawn from personal observations by Gesner and his colleagues. Conrad Gesner (March 26, 1516 - December 13, 1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. To his contemporaries he was best known as a botanist, but in 1551 he was the first to describe brown adipose tissue; and in 1565 the first to document the pencil. He died of the plague, at the age of 49, the year after his ennoblement

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning peacock, captured in the 16th century by Conrad Gesner for his groundbreaking work, Historiae Animalium. Gesner believed that the peacock had been domesticated since ancient times, with the Greeks importing them from barbarian tribes. While considered rare by the Romans, Gesner claimed they were easily found during his era. Historiae Animalium is hailed as the first modern zoological work and revolutionized animal classification. The book features hand-colored woodcuts meticulously drawn from personal observations made by Gesner and his colleagues. This artistic touch brings to life the vibrant colors of nature's creations. Conrad Gesner was a renowned Swiss naturalist and bibliographer who excelled not only in botany but also made significant contributions to science. In 1551, he became the first person to describe brown adipose tissue and later documented pencils in 1565. Tragically, he succumbed to the plague at just 49 years old, a year after being ennobled for his achievements. The image itself portrays an Indian peafowl or blue peafowl (Pavo cristatus), belonging to the phasianidae family within avialae class. Its resplendent plumage mesmerizes viewers with its iridescent blues and greens against a backdrop of intricate patterns. This vintage artwork holds historical significance as one of humanity's earliest attempts at accurately describing animals through scientific observation. It serves as a testament to both Conrad Gesner's pioneering spirit and artistic talent. Alamy presents this enhanced woodcut illustration with utmost charm and reverence for history while preserving its original allure without any commercial intent. As we gaze upon this timeless masterpiece, we are reminded of our enduring fascination with nature's wonders throughout centuries past.
