EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness the fourth and final vision of Marguerite-Marie Alacoque (1647-1690) of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which occurred on June 17, 1675, in the small village of Paray-le-Mondial, France. Alacoque, a humble and devout servant of the Church, experienced a series of extraordinary visions throughout her life, but it was this encounter that would forever change the course of Catholic history. During this vision, Alacoque beheld a radiant and loving Heart of Jesus, which spoke to her and revealed His deep desire for the world to recognize and revere His love. This vision marked the beginning of the Catholic cult of the Sacred Heart, a devotion that continues to be celebrated around the world today. The historical significance of this moment is captured in this print, with Alacoque depicted in a state of rapturous devotion, her eyes closed and her hands raised in prayer. The vision of the Sacred Heart looms large behind her, its divine light illuminating the room and filling Alacoque with a sense of peace and joy. The impact of Alacoque's visions was felt far beyond the small village of Paray-le-Mondial. The devotion to the Sacred Heart spread rapidly throughout France and beyond, and it was soon embraced by the Church. In 1672, Alacoque received a mandate from the Bishop of Autun to spread the devotion, and she spent the rest of her life traveling and sharing her message with others. Today, the cult of the Sacred Heart is celebrated on the feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which falls on the Friday following the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The devotion continues to inspire and bring comfort to countless Catholics around the world, a testament to the enduring power of Alacoque's vision and the love of Jesus for His people.
