Ce monument commmore la victoire dcisive de 1813 des nations allies (Autriche, Prusse, Russie et Sude) contre les troupes napoloniennes. Ce monument est le dernier bastion pris par les Allis Leipzig le 20 avril aprs un intense pilonnage et la capitulation de la garnison allemande qui s'y tait replie.
