This evocative print captures the tension and drama of the Affaire des Poignards, or Affair of the Daggers, which unfolded on the fateful night of February 28, 1791, at the Palais des Tuileries in Paris. The French Revolution was in full swing, and the royalist Chevaliers du Poignard, a secret society of nobles, believed they had found the opportunity to seize power and overthrow the new government. In the foreground of the image, we see the fearless figure of the Marquis de Lafayette, a key revolutionary leader, standing defiantly in the doorway of the palace, sword in hand. He had been alerted to the plot and had rallied a group of loyal soldiers to thwart the coup attempt. The royalist conspirators, armed with daggers, can be seen in the background, frozen in surprise and disbelief as they are confronted by the determined resistance. The Affaire des Poignards marked a turning point in the French Revolution, as it demonstrated that the revolutionary forces were not only capable of defending themselves against counter-revolutionary plots but also that they had the support of the people. The failed coup attempt strengthened the resolve of the revolutionaries and further solidified their hold on power.
