EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the renowned British sculptor, Captain Adrian Jones (1845-1938), in his studio surrounded by the majestic plaster cast of his most famous work, "Peace in her Quadriga." Completed in 1912, the allegorical figure of Peace, three times the height of the sculptor himself, was commissioned for the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner in Central London. Jones, a retired army captain, had no formal art training but found great success in creating horse portraits. The Peace statue, a symbol of historical significance, depicts a winged female figure with an olive branch in one hand and a laurel branch in the other. The white, winged figure, adorned with a wreath, stands triumphantly atop a chariot pulled by four horses. The intricately detailed plaster cast, with its elegant curves and symbolic elements, is a testament to Jones' artistic skill and vision. The photograph captures the artist in deep concentration, as he meticulously examines the cast, no doubt pondering the final details of the statue that would soon grace the iconic Wellington Arch. The peaceful atmosphere of the studio, filled with natural light and the subtle scent of plaster, adds to the serene and inspiring scene. The completion of "Peace in her Quadriga" in 1912 marked a significant milestone in Jones' artistic career, cementing his place in the annals of British sculpture history. The allegorical figure of Peace, with its powerful symbolism and timeless beauty, continues to inspire awe and admiration to this day.
