EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken circa 1917-1918, Admiral Sir Frederick Charles Doveton Sturdee, 1st Baronet (1859-1925) and Rear Admiral Sir Roger John Brownlow Keyes (1872-1945) stand side by side on the deck of a Royal Navy ship. Both men are dressed in their full naval uniforms, exuding an air of authority and experience. Admiral Sturdee, with a distinguished career spanning over four decades, had earned his reputation as a capable and successful naval commander. He had served in the China War, the Russo-Japanese War, and both World Wars. From June 1917, he commanded the 4th Battle Squadron, with Rear Admiral Keyes serving as his second in command. Rear Admiral Keyes, a highly respected naval officer in his own right, had also seen active service in the Russo-Japanese War and both World Wars. He had been awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. The two admirals are shown here in the midst of their duties, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of naval life at sea. The ship's sails are hoisted high, and the water churns around them as they prepare for battle or another mission. The photograph captures a moment of camaraderie and mutual respect between two great naval leaders, as they stand together, ready to face the challenges of the sea and the war. The photograph is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the naval personnel who served during this period, and the crucial role they played in shaping the course of world history.
