1792 1849 Adelaide Lace Meiningen Players Ringlets Saxe Trimming Will I Am

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (1792-1849), the future Queen Consort of William IV, in the year 1849, at the age of 50. Adelaide, born Princess Amelia of the United Kingdom, was the eldest daughter of the unpopular King William IV, and was raised in exile in Germany following her father's accession to the throne in 1830. In 1818, she married Duke Bernhard II of Saxe-Meiningen, and the couple ruled together until his death in 1866. In this portrait, Adelaide is depicted in a regal blue gown, adorned with intricate lace detailing, which was a popular fashion trend during the Victorian era. Her ringlets cascade down her shoulders, framing her delicate features. The Queen is shown in the act of trimming a garment, a task that was considered a necessary duty for a monarch, as well as a symbol of her domestic skills and femininity. Adelaide's connection to England was significant, as she was the eldest living legitimate child of King William IV, and therefore the heir to the throne before the birth of Queen Victoria. However, her German upbringing and marriage made her an outsider in the eyes of many in the British court and public. Despite this, Adelaide was well-liked and respected, and her marriage to Bernhard II was a happy one. This photograph, taken in 1849, provides a glimpse into the life of a little-known but important figure in British history. Adelaide's story is one of exile, duty, and love, and this image serves as a reminder of the complexities and nuances of the royal family tree.
