EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts the biblical story of the patriarch Abraham being buried in the cave of Machpelah, as recorded in both the Old Testament of the Bible in the Hebrew Bible (Genesis 25:9-10) and the New Testament of the Bible (Acts 7:15-16). The photograph, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back in time to this significant historical event. Abraham, the founding father of the Jewish and Islamic religions, is shown lying on a simple wooden bier, surrounded by his beloved sons Isaac and Ishmael. The brothers, united in their respect for their father, carry out the solemn rites of burial, ensuring that their father's remains are laid to rest in the cave of Machpelah, which had been purchased from the Hittites as a burial site for Abraham and his family (Genesis 23:16-20). The cave, a place of great significance in both Jewish and Islamic tradition, is located in the West Bank city of Hebron. It is believed to be the burial place of not only Abraham, but also his wife Sarah, their son Isaac, and his wife Rebecca, as well as their grandchildren Jacob and Leah. This poignant scene of familial love and respect, as well as the rich historical and religious significance of the location, make this photograph a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds between family, faith, and history. The image invites us to reflect on the stories and traditions that have shaped the world we live in today, and the enduring importance of family and faith in our own lives.
