Abd-El Aziz, who ruled Morocco from 1894 to 1908, was a capable and respected leader. However, his reign was marred by increasing European interference in Moroccan affairs, particularly from the French. In an attempt to assert his independence, Abd-El Aziz embarked on a series of military campaigns against European forces. Despite initial successes, these campaigns ultimately proved disastrous. In 1907, the French launched a major offensive against Morocco, and Abd-El Aziz was forced to seek the help of other European powers to stave off the invasion. However, his appeals for assistance were rebuffed, leaving him increasingly isolated and vulnerable. In early 1908, Abd-El Aziz's forces were decisively defeated by the French at the Battle of Oued Noun. Facing certain capture, Abd-El Aziz fled the country, leaving his brother Moulay Hafid to assume the throne. This photograph, taken during Abd-El Aziz's flight, shows the defeated sultan making his way across the desert, accompanied by a small retinue of loyal followers.
