This photograph captures the distinguished visage of August Von Wassermann, a pioneering German bacteriologist who made significant strides in the fields of serology and immunology. Born on February 15, 1866, in Wiesbaden, Germany, Von Wassermann is best known for developing the serological diagnostic test that bears his name, the Wassermann test. This test revolutionized the diagnosis of syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease that was a major public health concern during the early 20th century. The image, taken in 1925, shows Von Wassermann in his later years with a prominent moustache and a serious expression. He is dressed in formal attire, including a crisp white shirt, dark suit, and tie. The background is simple, with a plain wall and a single window providing the only visual distractions. Von Wassermann's contributions to the medical world were numerous, but his work on syphilis is perhaps his most enduring legacy.
