This engraving depicts a member of the Shuli Tribe, an ethnic group native to the Central African region that came under the rule of Emin Pasha, the Egyptian Governor of the Equatorial Province, around 1887. The Shuli people inhabited the area that is now modern-day South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Emin Pasha had been appointed as the governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province in 1879, and during his tenure, he led several military expeditions to expand Egyptian control over the region.
