9th Hampshire Regiment in Vladivostock

The 9th (Cyclist) Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment march through the streets of Vladivostock, about to set off for Omsk in Siberia, as part of the Allied Intervention Force in the Russian Civil War. They had arrived in Vladivostock from their previous posting in India at the end of November 1918, and were equipped with Arctic clothing before making the 23 day, 4000 mile rail journey to Omsk on the Trans-Siberian Railway, arriving on 7 January 1919. There, they formed part of a multi-national military presence supporting the anti-Bolshevik White forces. Moving on to Ekaterinburg in May 1919, they were forced to evacuate in August due to the rapid Bolshevik advance, and left Russia in November 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 9th (Cyclist) Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment as they prepare to march through the snowy streets of Vladivostock, Russia, in December 1918. Having recently arrived from their posting in India, the soldiers are about to embark on a 23-day, 4000-mile rail journey to Omsk, as part of the Allied Intervention Force in the Russian Civil War. Dressed in Arctic clothing, they are determined to support the anti-Bolshevik White forces in their struggle against the Red Army. The Hampshire Regiment had arrived in Vladivostock at the end of November 1918, and spent the following weeks being equipped and prepared for the harsh Siberian conditions. Their journey to Omsk would take them across vast expanses of frozen terrain, through some of the most inhospitable regions of Russia. Upon arriving in Omsk in early January 1919, the 9th Hampshire Regiment joined a multi-national military presence, including forces from the United States, Japan, and other Allied powers. Together, they formed a crucial part of the effort to support the White forces in their fight against the Bolsheviks. However, their time in Russia was not without its challenges. In May 1919, the regiment was forced to evacuate Ekaterinburg due to the rapid advance of the Red Army. They finally left Russia in November 1919, having played a significant role in the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the 9th Hampshire Regiment during their time in Russia, and the complex and often overlooked history of the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War.
