Alexandria Constructed Light House Pharos Philadelphus Ptolemy Wonders Cnidus Sostratus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print brings to life the ancient wonder of the Pharos Lighthouse, also known as the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Constructed around 280 BC under the commission of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the lighthouse was a marvel of engineering and architectural innovation, built by the Greek architect Sostratus of Cnidus. Located in Alexandria, Egypt, the Pharos Lighthouse was a towering structure, standing at an estimated height of over 100 meters. Its primary function was to serve as a navigational aid for ancient seafarers, with its light reportedly visible up to 50 km out to sea. This made it an essential beacon for ships sailing along the treacherous coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. The lighthouse was a complex structure, with a base made of limestone and a tower constructed of limestone and brick. The tower was believed to have been octagonal in shape, with a square base, and was adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements. The upper part of the tower was crowned with a large bonfire, which was used to produce the light that guided ships safely to shore. Despite the passage of time and the ravages of the elements, the Pharos Lighthouse remains an enduring symbol of human ingenuity and achievement. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when such feats of engineering were considered the height of human accomplishment. The image captures the grandeur and majesty of the lighthouse, with its imposing presence standing proud against the backdrop of the azure sea and the horizon. This photograph print is a testament to the rich history of ancient civilizations and the wonders they left behind. It serves as a reminder of the importance of exploration, discovery, and the pursuit of knowledge, values that continue to drive us forward even today.
