1877 John Tyndall Irish born physicist

Woodburytype photograph by Lock & Whitfield from " Men of Mark" 1877. John Tyndall (2nd August 1820 - 4 December 1893) was a well known Irish-born physicist who worked on diamagnetism, thermal radiation and atmospheric processes. He was also a mountain climber, spending much time in the alps - he climbed the Matterhorn within three years of the first ascent. He wrote on Glaciers and glacial flow - work that set him in conflict with accepted expert James David Forbes. Later in life he became an advocate for the separation of science and religion, and was associated with Darwin in the eyes of the public. He advocated Darwinism but there is no clear evidence that he was an atheist. He thought that knowledge and rationality belonged with science and faith and spiritualism with religion. He was ardent in his opposition of Irish Home Rule, which he saw as a coup for priests and Catholcism

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John Tyndall, a prominent Irish-born physicist of the 19th century. The Woodburytype photograph by Lock & Whitfield showcases his distinguished features and intellectual prowess. Known for his groundbreaking work on diamagnetism, thermal radiation, and atmospheric processes, Tyndall was a true supporter of scientific advancement. Beyond his scientific endeavors, Tyndall's adventurous spirit led him to conquer the majestic Alps as an avid mountain climber. Within three years of its first ascent, he triumphantly scaled the iconic Matterhorn. His passion extended beyond physical challenges; he delved into glacial studies and wrote extensively about glaciers' flow patterns – a subject that sparked controversy with established expert James David Forbes. As time went on, Tyndall became an advocate for separating science from religion. Although associated with Darwin in public perception due to their shared views on evolution, there is no concrete evidence suggesting he was an atheist himself. Instead, he believed that knowledge and rationality belonged in the realm of science while faith and spiritualism were integral to religion. Tyndall's convictions also extended to politics; vehemently opposing Irish Home Rule which he saw as a threat dominated by priests and Catholicism. Throughout his life, this remarkable individual left an indelible mark through his contributions to physics and unwavering dedication to advancing human understanding in both scientific and philosophical realms.
