The image portrays a pivotal moment in the 12-hour long engagement, which took place on January 22, 1879, at the mission station and military outpost of Rorke's Drift in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In the foreground, British soldiers, armed with rifles and bayonets, fiercely defend their position against the relentless Zulu impis, who charge at them with their sharp assegai spears.
