Xanthi, Greece

Xanthi - a city in northern Greece, in the East Macedonia and Thrace periphery. It is the capital of Xanthi Prefecture. The city is known as Iskece in Turkish, and Ksanti or Skecha in Bulgarian. The Bulgarians took the city of Xanthi in 1912, but after a period of eight months it was taken by the Greek army. Shortly thereafter, as part of the accords concluding the Balkan Wars, Xanthi and Western Thrace were ceded to Bulgaria, and remained under the control of the latter till the end of World War I. Following the Bulgarian defeat in this war, Western Thrace, and thus Xanthi, became a permanent part of Greece (1919-1920).Xanthi was again occupied by Bulgarians between 1941-1944 during World War II

EDITORS COMMENTS
Xanthi, a historic city located in the northern part of Greece, in the East Macedonia and Thrace periphery, serves as the capital of Xanthi Prefecture. Known as Iskece in Turkish and Ksanti or Skecha in Bulgarian, Xanthi holds a rich and complex history. In 1912, the city was initially taken by the Bulgarian army but was regained by the Greek army just eight months later. As a result of the accords concluding the Balkan Wars, Xanthi and Western Thrace were ceded to Bulgaria, and the city remained under Bulgarian control until the end of World War I. The city's history is marked by periods of occupation, including during World War II when it was taken by the Bulgarian army once again between 1941 and 1944. Xanthi's architectural landscape is a blend of various influences, reflecting its multicultural past. The city's historic center features the beautiful Ottoman-style mosques, traditional houses, and the ancient Roman ruins of the ancient city of Maroneia. The print showcases the vibrant and colorful streets of Xanthi, with its traditional houses adorned with intricate wooden balconies and shutters. The image transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of this beautiful Greek city. Xanthi's resilience and enduring spirit are evident in its continued growth and development as a thriving modern city, while preserving its historic roots.
