Westwood Manor OP05899
Group portrait outside the entrance front of Westwood Manor, Wiltshire, c.1860. Unknown photographer, albumen print. Westwood Manor dates from the 15th century, but later owners changed the house considerably, removing wings, adding stair turrets and porches and inserting a floor into the open hall. The projecting remains of the east wing, visible to the right of the photograph, were removed shortly after this image was taken. From the late 18th century the house was occupied by the Tugwell family from Bath. The antiquarian Edgar Graham Lister purchased the property in 1911, and bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group portrait outside the majestic entrance front of Westwood Manor in Wiltshire, circa 1860. The unknown photographer skillfully used albumen printing to immortalize this historic moment. Westwood Manor, with its origins dating back to the 15th century, underwent significant transformations under later owners who added stair turrets and porches while removing wings. They even inserted a floor into the open hall, altering its original design. In this photograph, we can see the remnants of the east wing on the right side; however, it was soon removed after this image was taken. For many years from the late 18th century onwards, Westwood Manor became home to the Tugwell family from Bath. However, in 1911, an esteemed antiquarian named Edgar Graham Lister acquired this remarkable property. Recognizing its historical significance and beauty, Lister bequeathed Westwood Manor to the National Trust in 1956. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time by Historic England's archive collection "Picturing England" we are transported back to Victorian-era Britain. This image not only showcases architectural details but also offers a glimpse into people's lives during that period.
