Born on February 21, 1806, Walter Francis Scott assumed the ducal titles upon the death of his father in 1812. He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge, and entered Parliament in 1826, representing Roxburghshire. The Duke's political career spanned over four decades and saw him hold various positions, including Lord Privy Seal, Secretary of State for Scotland, and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He was a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party and played a significant role in shaping British foreign policy during the Crimean War. In addition to his political pursuits, the Duke was an accomplished art collector and patron of the arts. He expanded the Buccleuch Collection, which is now housed in the Buccleuch Art Gallery in London, and was a trustee of the National Gallery.
