EDITORS COMMENTS
Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy (1820-1878): A Striking Portrait in Military Uniform This carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph features Vittorio Emanuele II, the fifth and final King of the Two Sicilies before becoming the first King of a unified Italy in 1861. Taken around 1865, this image showcases the monarch in his regal attire, adorned with numerous medals and a prominent moustache. Born in 1820, Vittorio Emanuele II was the last Bourbon king of the Two Sicilies before the Italian unification. He played a significant role in the Risorgimento, the movement for Italian independence and unification. In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi's troops captured Sicily, and Vittorio Emanuele II fled to Gaeta. After the fall of Gaeta in February 1861, he abdicated and was exiled. Later that year, he was invited to Turin to become the first King of Italy. He ruled until his death in 1878. In this photograph, the King wears the uniform of the Italian Army, symbolizing his commitment to the new Italian state. The medals on his chest represent his military achievements and dedication to the cause of Italian unification. The CDV format, popular in the mid-19th century, allowed for the mass production and distribution of photographs, making it possible for people to own images of their monarchs and other notable figures. This photograph of Vittorio Emanuele II is a testament to the historical significance of the man and the era in which he lived. It is a powerful reminder of the pivotal role he played in the unification of Italy and the establishment of the Italian monarchy.
