APSLEY HOUSE, London. " Virgin and Child". A copy of Raphaels Madonna della Sedia - the faces were attributed to Raphael (1483-1520), and the chiaroscurro to Giulio Romano (1499-1546), but neither attribution stands up. Possibly early 17th century. Currently no attribution. Previously part of the Spanish Royal Collection. Captured by Wellington at Vitoria in 1813

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of "Virgin and Child N070575" housed in London's Apsley House. The artwork is a remarkable copy of Raphael's renowned Madonna della Sedia, although its true origins remain a mystery. The faces were once attributed to the master himself, Raphael (1483-1520), while the chiaroscuro technique was believed to be executed by Giulio Romano (1499-1546). However, further research has disproven these attributions. Dating back possibly to the early 17th century, this exquisite piece holds an intriguing history. It was previously part of the Spanish Royal Collection before being captured by Wellington during his triumphant campaign at Vitoria in 1813. Now preserved within Apsley House, it continues to captivate viewers with its delicate portrayal of motherly love and divine innocence. The photograph beautifully captures every intricate detail of this masterpiece – from the tender expressions on both Mary and Jesus' faces to the expert use of light and shadow that adds depth and drama to the composition. Its rich colors are brought to life through careful preservation efforts by Historic England Photo Library. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded not only of its artistic significance but also how art can transcend time and boundaries. It serves as a testament to human creativity throughout centuries and invites us into a world where beauty knows no limits or constraints.
