Born on February 26, 1802, in Besançon, France, Hugo was a prolific writer whose works have left an indelible mark on French literature. Hugo's literary career began in earnest in the 1820s, but he gained widespread recognition in the 1830s with the publication of "Hans Phouca, or The Last Day of a Condemned Man," a poetic drama that was highly controversial at the time. Despite facing censorship and exile, Hugo continued to write, producing a vast body of work that spanned poetry, drama, and prose. In 1851, Hugo went into exile in Brussels to escape the authoritarian regime of Napoleon III. He spent 11 years in exile, during which time he wrote some of his most famous works, including "Les Misérables." In 1870, he returned to France and was welcomed back with open arms by the people. This photograph of Victor Hugo, taken just a few years before his death in 1885, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of this great French writer.
