1851 Celebrated Liebig Opera Performed Quartet Rigoletto Verdi

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the essence of the celebrated quartet from the final act of Giuseppe Verdi's operatic masterpiece, Rigoletto, which was first performed at the La Fenice Theatre in Venice on March 11, 1851. The quartet, also known as the "Quartet of the Masks," is one of the most famous and emotionally charged moments in all of opera. In this historic photograph, four esteemed performers of the time are depicted in the midst of their performance. On the far left, tenor Marietto Alessio, portrays the Duke of Mantua, a charming yet deceitful character who is the central antagonist of the opera. To his right, baritone Giuseppe Campanini takes on the role of Rigoletto, the jester and the father of the beloved Gilda, who is portrayed by the elegant and graceful soprano, Giuseppina Strepponi. On the far right, the bass voice of Luigi Lablache resonates as Monterone, the vengeful father of Gilda, who sets the tragic events of the opera in motion with his curse. The quartet takes place in the Duke's palace, where Rigoletto, in an attempt to protect his daughter, deceives the Duke into believing that Gilda is his mistress. The Duke, in turn, is furious and vows to take revenge. The quartet's hauntingly beautiful music underscores the tragic turn of events and the inevitable downfall of Rigoletto. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, provides a glimpse into the rich history of opera and the performances of some of its most celebrated artists. The quartet from Rigoletto remains a testament to Verdi's genius and the enduring power of music to move and captivate audiences.
