EDITORS COMMENTS
The Valley of the Queens, a breathtaking and enigmatic location in Egypt's Western Desert, is home to some of the most significant archaeological discoveries in ancient Egyptian history. In this evocative photograph by Lionel Coates, two colossal statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III (reign 1391-1353 BC) stand guard at the entrance to his mortuary temple. Dating back to the New Kingdom period, the temple complex is believed to have been a funerary monument for the pharaoh and his queen, Tiye. The Colossi of Menon, as they are commonly known, depict Amenhotep III in a seated position, with his arms crossed over his chest and a serene expression on his face. The statues, each over 8 meters high, were likely originally part of a grand gateway leading to the temple. The Valley of the Queens, with its stunning natural beauty and rich archaeological treasures, has long been a source of fascination for archaeologists, historians, and adventurers alike. The site, which is located near the more famous Valley of the Kings, is believed to have been the burial place for many pharaohs, queens, and nobles of the New Kingdom. The area's unique combination of history, mystery, and natural wonder continues to captivate visitors from around the world. This photograph, taken by renowned photographer Lionel Coates, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when ancient Egypt was at the height of its power and influence. The Colossi of Menon, with their imposing presence and intricate details, serve as a testament to the ingenuity and artistic prowess of the ancient Egyptians. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the enduring legacy of Egypt's rich and complex history.
