EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the First World War, as Turkish cavalrymen take a respite from the battles raging in and around the city of Gaza in Palestine. Dated to April 1917, the image shows an encampment of Turkish soldiers and their horses, bivouacking in the Middle Eastern desert. The Great War had reached the Middle East in late 1914, with the Ottoman Empire, allied with Germany, facing off against the British and French forces. The Turkish cavalry, a formidable and feared military force during this period, are seen here camped outside the walls of Gaza. Their horses, tethered to stakes in the sand, graze on meager rations while their riders rest, some leaning against their saddles, others engaged in conversation or tending to their weapons. The harsh desert landscape stretches out behind them, dotted with small tents and the occasional tree, providing little relief from the intense heat and arid conditions. The soldiers, dressed in their military uniforms, appear focused and determined, their expressions revealing the weight of the ongoing conflict. The image offers a glimpse into the daily life of these soldiers during wartime, as they prepared for the next engagement against their enemies. The Turkish cavalry would play a significant role in the Battle of Gaza, which took place later that month, ultimately resulting in a defeat for the Ottoman forces. This poignant photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers on all sides during the First World War.
