This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Battle of Tsushima Strait, which took place on May 27, 1905, during the Russo-Japanese War. In the image, Russian Admiral Rozhdestvensky is seen transferring from the sinking battleship Borodino to the torpedo boat Buinis. The defeat of the Russian fleet in this battle was overwhelming, with the Japanese Navy inflicting significant damage and ultimately leading to Russia's withdrawal from the war. The Battle of Tsushima Strait was a turning point in the Russo-Japanese War, which began in February 1904 and was fought over territorial disputes in Manchuria and Korea. The Russian fleet, led by Admiral Zinovy Rozhdestvensky, sailed from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to relieve the besieged Port Arthur. However, they were met with a powerful Japanese fleet under Admiral Togo Heihachiro. The ensuing battle saw the Russians suffer heavy losses, with several ships sinking and many lives lost. In the chaos of the battle, Admiral Rozhdestvensky was forced to abandon the Borodino, which was taking on water and listing heavily. He made his way to the nearby torpedo boat Buinis, where he was taken aboard and taken to safety. The defeat at Tsushima Strait was a significant blow to Russian morale and marked the end of their naval presence in the Far East. The war eventually ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth, signed on September 5, 1905, which granted Japan control over Port Arthur and the Liaodong Peninsula. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the events that transpired during this pivotal moment in history.
