EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment in August 1643 when Lord Essex, leading a 15,000-strong Train-Bands militia force, marched out of London to relieve the Siege of Gloucester. The Train-Bands, a civilian militia made up of ordinary men from all walks of life, had been mobilized to support the Parliamentarian cause during the English Civil War. The procession depicted in the photograph shows Lord Essex at the head of the militia, surrounded by his officers and a preacher, urging the troops on with a passionate sermon. The militia members, many of whom are shown here with their families, march down a bustling London street, determined and resolute in the face of the impending battle against Prince Rupert's cavalry. The Siege of Gloucester was a significant event in the English Civil War, with the city under siege by Royalist forces led by Prince Rupert since June 1643. The relief force, which included the Train-Bands militia, arrived in early August, and after a fierce battle, the city was successfully relieved, marking a crucial victory for the Parliamentarians. Despite the gravity of the situation, the image also conveys a sense of community and solidarity among the militia members and their families, who came together to defend their homes and their beliefs. The Train-Bands militia played a crucial role in the English Civil War, and their bravery and determination continue to be celebrated as an important chapter in British history.
