EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the distinguished and elegant figure of Sir George Alexander, an English actor and theatre manager, in the year 1918. Born George Alexander Gibb Samson on February 18, 1858, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Alexander rose to prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a leading figure in British theatre. Sir George Alexander began his career as an actor, making his debut on the London stage in 1878. He quickly gained recognition for his versatility and range, performing in both classical and contemporary roles. However, it was his transition to theatre management that would bring him even greater success. In 1893, Alexander became the manager of the Haymarket Theatre in London, where he produced a series of critically acclaimed productions. He later went on to manage the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and the Lyceum Theatre. Under his leadership, these theatres became renowned for their high-quality productions and innovative staging. Alexander's contributions to British theatre extended beyond his managerial roles. He was a prolific actor, appearing in over 50 films between 1914 and 1936, and he also wrote several plays and memoirs. In 1912, he was knighted by King George V for his services to the theatre. This photograph captures Sir George Alexander in the prime of his career, with an air of authority and sophistication that belies his humble beginnings. Dressed in a formal suit and wearing a bow tie, he gazes intently into the distance, as if contemplating the next great production he will bring to life on the stage. The photograph is a testament to his enduring legacy as a pioneering figure in British theatre, and a reminder of the power of the arts to captivate and inspire generations.
