EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the poignant moment from Act 2, Scene 3 of the historic 1866 opera production of "Mignon" by Ambroise Thomas. In this scene, the title character, Mignon, portrayed by the talented soprano Pauline Viardot-Garcia (1821-1910), is seen dressing in the clothes of the actress Philine, who had previously worn them on stage. Mignon, a foundling who has been raised in a monastery, believes that Philine is her long-lost sister. The scene takes a turn as Wilhelm, played by tenor Jean-Baptiste Faure (1810-1891), and Philine, portrayed by mezzo-soprano Marie Sasse (1832-1905), make fun of Mignon's attempts to imitate Philine's appearance. The humor is lost on Mignon, who is deeply moved by the connection she feels to her supposed sister. This photograph, taken by the renowned German photographer Franz Hanfstaengl (1821-1877) and published by the esteemed Liebig's Monatshefte für Lithographien und Photographien, offers a unique glimpse into the world of 19th-century opera. The intricately detailed costumes, the expressive facial expressions of the performers, and the theatrical setting all contribute to the rich historical context of this image. The opera "Mignon," which premiered in Paris in 1866, was based on the novel "Fraülein von Barnhelm" by Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin. The production was a great success, and Viardot-Garcia's performance as Mignon was particularly acclaimed. This photograph serves as a testament to the enduring power of music and the arts to transport us to another time and place.
