1524 Archbishop Founders Friars Named Orders

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a group of Theatine Friars, a religious order founded in 1524 in the Italian town of Theate. Named after their place of origin, the order was established by the local archbishop, Cardinal Girolamo Ragusa, and St. Cajetan Thaddeus of Thiene. The Theatine Friars, also known as the Theatines or the Congregation of the Reformation of the Clergy, were a reformist Catholic religious order dedicated to the revival of the spiritual and moral life of the clergy. The men in this photograph are dressed in the distinctive Theatine habit, which includes a brown tunic, a white scapular, and a black cape. They are shown in a humble and pensive setting, deep in prayer and contemplation. The Theatine Friars were known for their rigorous observance of the Rule of St. Augustine and their commitment to the education and spiritual formation of the laity. The Theatine Order was founded during a time of great religious and political upheaval in Europe, as the Protestant Reformation was gaining momentum. The Theatines sought to counter the spread of Protestantism by promoting the renewal of the Catholic Church from within. They established schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions, and their preaching and teaching helped to inspire a new wave of religious fervor among the faithful. This photograph is a rare and precious glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the daily life of these devoted men and the spiritual world they inhabited. It is a reminder of the rich history and enduring legacy of the Theatine Friars, who continue to inspire and challenge us with their commitment to the spiritual life and the service of God and neighbor.
