EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in Zulu history, as 12-year-old Dinuzulu, the son of King Cetshwayo, undergoes his education under the watchful eye of his tutor in 1883. At the age of 14 and weighing an impressive 14 stone, Dinuzulu would go on to succeed his father as the King of the Zulus in 1884, following the devastating Zulu Wars that left the once powerful kingdom in disarray. The Zulu Wars, which took place between 1879 and 1884, were a series of conflicts between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. The first war ended with the defeat of the Zulus and the capture of King Cetshwayo, who was later exiled to the Cape Colony. Dinuzulu, however, managed to evade capture and continued to lead resistance against the British. Despite his early success in leading the resistance, Dinuzulu's reign was marked by turmoil. He was eventually captured by the British in 1888 and exiled to the Seychelles. Dinuzulu was eventually allowed to return to South Africa in 1897, but he was kept under close watch and was not allowed to rule freely. He died in October 1913, at the age of 45. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of Dinuzulu during his formative years, as he prepared to take on the mantle of leadership in the face of great adversity. It serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous history of the Zulu people and the challenges they faced during the late 19th century.
