This evocative sketch, published by the Illustrated London News (ILN) on July 18, 1879, captures the decisive moment of the Zulu War's final defeat at the burning of Ulundi on July 4, 1879. The British Army, massed in the foreground, stands victorious over the once formidable Zulu forces. The infantry, dressed in their red coats and bearskins, are a stark contrast to the smoldering ruins of Ulundi in the background. Several gun carriages, now reduced to burnt-out husks, bear testament to the intense battle that had taken place. The Zulu capital, a place of great cultural and historical significance, had been reduced to ashes. The defeat of the Zulus at Ulundi marked the end of the war, which had begun just six months earlier with the infamous Battle of Isandlwana. The British, led by Lieutenant-General Lord Chelmsford, had suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Zulu army, but were determined to avenge their losses. The final battle at Ulundi saw the British employing superior firepower and tactics, ultimately leading to the Zulu surrender. This historical sketch, with its vivid depiction of the aftermath of the battle, provides a poignant reminder of the cost of war and the impact it has on people and places.
