The Zulu war. Scene of the Battle of Isandula (Isandhlwana)

After the Battle of Isadhlwana. A description by Lieutenant Crealock reads, Day waned and the night hung over the hill, when we reached the last ridge, beyond which lay what had been our camp. To the hill on the left we sent off Major Black and three companies of the 24th to seize it. The neck between it and the hill we must gain at all hazards. In silence we marched down into the gloom below, where lay, shrouded by a merciful pall, the horrors of the past day. 1, 700 British soldiers had perished in the bloodiest battle of the Zulu war, on 22nd January 1879

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant scene captures the aftermath of the Battle of Isandlwana (Isandhlwana), which took place on January 22, 1879, during the Zulu War. The sun had set, and the night had descended upon the battlefield, hiding the horrors that lay before. As Lieutenant Crealock and his surviving soldiers approached the final ridge, they sent Major Black and three companies of the 24th Regiment to secure a nearby hill. The neck of land between the two hills was crucial to gain control of the area. The silence of the night was broken only by the sound of footsteps as the soldiers marched down into the gloom below. The ground was still strewn with the remnants of the previous day's carnage, where 1,700 British soldiers had lost their lives in the bloodiest battle of the Zulu War. The scene was shrouded in a merciful pall, allowing for a brief moment of respite from the gruesome sights and sounds that had filled the day. The hill on the left, now held by Major Black and his men, provided a vantage point to survey the devastation. The soldiers moved cautiously, knowing that the Zulu army was still a threat. The neck of land between the hills was a dangerous and precarious passage that would need to be secured at all costs. As the night hung heavy over the battlefield, the survivors took stock of their losses and prepared for the challenges that lay ahead. The Battle of Isandlwana was a turning point in the Zulu War, and the events of that day would be etched into history.
