EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the graves of the 17 brave British soldiers who fell in the defense of the fort and hospital at Rorkes Drift on January 22, 1879. The fort, located in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, was under the command of Lieutenant John Chard and Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, who led a small garrison of just 140 men against an estimated 7,000 Zulu warriors. The battle at Rorkes Drift took place on the same day that the British suffered their heaviest defeat of the Zulu War at Isandlwana, approximately 20 miles to the north. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the British defenders held out against the relentless Zulu attack, repelling wave after wave of warriors. The graves of the fallen soldiers are a stark reminder of the heavy toll the battle took on both sides. The Zulu warriors suffered an estimated loss of 1,500 men, while the British casualties numbered only 17. The heroism of the defenders of Rorkes Drift became a symbol of British resilience and determination during the Zulu War. This historical photograph, from the Illustrated London News, is an important record of the sacrifices made during this pivotal moment in history. The image provides a glimpse into the bravery and courage displayed by the British soldiers during the defense of Rorkes Drift and serves as a reminder of the human cost of war.
