EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the yacht Eira, captained by the intrepid explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith, as it braved the treacherous waters of the Arctic region around Franz Joseph Land and the ocean north of Russia during the late 19th century. The Eira was used for a groundbreaking exploration expedition between 1881 and 1882, during which it became trapped in the ice off the coast of Cape Flora in August 1881. The crew, including Leigh Smith, were left stranded and faced an epic journey to safety. Desperate to reach Nova Zembla, the crew dragged the ship's boats over the ice and braved a strong gale to try and make their way through the frigid waters. Their efforts were eventually rewarded when they were rescued by Sir Allen Young and his ship, the Hope, in August 1882 at Matotchkin Strait. The harrowing experience of being caught in the Arctic ice and the subsequent rescue operation became a significant moment in maritime and polar exploration history. This engraving is a testament to the courage and determination of Leigh Smith and his crew, who faced the unknown and endured unimaginable hardships to push the boundaries of human exploration. The image, from the Illustrated London News, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past and the daring adventures that shaped our understanding of the world.
