EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the opulence and grandeur of the Turkish Bath Cooling Room on board the RMS Titanic, taken during her maiden voyage in April 1912. The Titanic, a marvel of the 20th century, surpassed all rivals in size and luxury, and the Turkish Bath was no exception. The room, located on the ship's deck B, was an import from the Orient and offered passengers a unique and relaxing experience. The Turkish Bath was a popular spa treatment during the early 20th century, and the Titanic's version was no less impressive. The room featured ornate tilework, intricate mosaics, and a large marble fountain, all designed to create an atmosphere of tranquility and relaxation. Passengers would enter the bathing area, where they would be scrubbed down with soap and exfoliating mitts before being bathed in warm water. After the bath, they would retire to the cooling room, where they would be wrapped in warm towels and blankets to help their bodies adjust to the temperature change. The cooling room, as shown in this photograph, was a beautiful and serene space, with large windows that allowed natural light to filter in and tall columns that created an airy and open feel. The room was also decorated with potted plants and ornate lanterns, adding to the sense of luxury and relaxation. The sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912, was a tragic event that forever changed the course of maritime history. But this photograph serves as a reminder of the incredible luxury and decadence that once existed on board the ship, and the Turkish Bath Cooling Room is just one example of the many ways in which the Titanic set a new standard for ocean travel in the early 20th century.
