Established in 1691 by the Jesuits, the mission was initially named Mission San Cayetano del Tumacacori and was situated on the east side of the Santa Cruz River. However, following the Oodham rebellion of 1751, the mission was relocated to its present site on the west side of the river and renamed Mission San Josè Tumacacori. The ruins of the mission, which date back to the 1700s, stand majestically on the west bank of the Santa Cruz River, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the region. The mission's architecture reflects the Spanish influence, with its whitewashed adobe walls and red-tiled roof. The mission's church, with its bell tower, remains an iconic symbol of the area's history and cultural heritage. The mission's peaceful surroundings, combined with its historical significance, make it a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike.
