EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical print captures the town of Accroful in 1874, a significant location during the 2nd Ashanti War between the British and the King of Ashanti. The British had set up camp in Accroful as part of their expedition to defeat the Ashanti forces and establish control over central Ghana. The relationship between the British and the Acing people of Ghana had been uneasy for decades, leading to escalating tensions that culminated in a full-scale attack on Kumasi, the capital of Ashanti, in 1873. The destruction wrought upon Kumasi was a turning point in history, as it marked the beginning of British colonial rule over Ghana. On 24th July 1874, Ghana was officially declared a crown colony by the British authorities. This print serves as a reminder of this pivotal moment in history when power dynamics shifted dramatically in central Ghana. The image captures not just buildings and streets but also hints at the complex web of political intrigue and military strategy that defined this turbulent period. It is an important piece of historical documentation that sheds light on a chapter often overlooked in mainstream narratives about colonialism and empire-building.
