EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1950s, a time when British Railways (BR) Southern Region sought to entice travelers with the allure of Surrey towns and the magnificent North Downs. The poster, part of a campaign promoting rail travel, showcases an exquisite illustration capturing two iconic landmarks - Farnham Castle and Box Hill. Farnham Castle, steeped in history dating back to its construction in 1138 by Henri de Blois, grandson of William the Conqueror, stands proudly at the forefront of this artwork. Its grandeur is beautifully depicted against a backdrop of rolling hills and lush greenery. A testament to centuries gone by and a reminder of Surrey's rich heritage. Adjacent to Farnham Castle lies Box Hill - an enchanting expanse of woodland and chalk downland that has long been cherished as a popular day-excursion destination from London. The artist's skillful brushstrokes capture its natural beauty with precision; one can almost feel the tranquility emanating from this picturesque location. The nostalgic charm radiating from this vintage poster transports us back in time when train journeys were not merely about reaching destinations but also about embarking on unforgettable adventures through scenic landscapes. It serves as a gentle reminder that even today, amidst our fast-paced lives, there are hidden gems waiting to be explored just beyond our city limits. Artwork by E Lander adds another layer of artistry to this already captivating composition. Preserved within National Railway Museum's Pict
