EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the early 20th century showcases "The Signal Station, Newquay, Cornwall" in all its historical glory. Taken sometime between 1910 and 1914 by the talented photographer Hughes, this image offers a glimpse into a bygone era. In the foreground of the photograph, we see a group of men gathered around ropes near the impressive building that is The Signal Station. Their purpose remains unknown to us, but their presence adds an air of mystery and intrigue to this scene. Adjacent to them sits a quaint wooden bench where a sailor rests, perhaps taking respite from his maritime adventures. Adding further charm to this snapshot are two individuals who bring life and movement into frame. A woman can be seen riding her bicycle with grace and elegance along the path leading up to The Signal Station. Her presence injects a sense of freedom and independence into this otherwise static composition. As we delve deeper into this visual time capsule, it becomes evident that The Signal Station was not destined for permanence. Demolished in 1920/21, it made way for what would become known as the Newquay War Memorial – an important symbol commemorating those lost during World War I. This remarkable photograph serves as both documentation and homage to an iconic landmark that once stood tall on Cornwall's picturesque coastline. It invites us to reflect upon history's ever-changing landscape while appreciating the beauty captured within its frames.
