The Salvation Army Social Scheme.
These are scenes from a Salvation Army Social Scheme in Hanbury Street, Whitechapel, London. It is one of the Industrial Workshops for destitute men. The object of these workshops is to provide food and shelter for homeless and destitute men in exchange for work done by them until such time as they are able to procure work themselves or through the agency of the Labour Bureau of the Salvation Army. Here we see the Sergeant of the Wood Shed, the mat-making shed, the wood-cuting shed and the Sergeant of mat-makers.
