The Old Station at Derby on the North Midland Railway, 1850

Travel in 1850. Oil painting by Cuthbert Hamilton Ellis, made in 1951, for a British Railways, London Midlands Region (BR/LMR) carriage print. The North Midland Railway, the line on which Derby Station was built, was formed in the 1830s and ran from Derby in Deryshire to Leeds in Yorkshire. In 1844 North Midland Railway amalgamated with York & North Midland Railway, Midland Counties Railway and the Birmingham & Derby Railway to form the Midland Railway. Derby Station was the Midland Railways headquarters. This was one of a series of paintings commissioned for carriage prints by George Dow, advertising manager of BR/LMR during the 1950s

The Old Station at Derby - A Glimpse into Travel in 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
. Step back in time with this oil painting by Cuthbert Hamilton Ellis, created in 1951 as a British Railways carriage print. The artwork takes us on a journey to the North Midland Railway, where the bustling Derby Station stood proudly as the headquarters of the Midland Railway. Transporting us to an era when steam locomotives ruled the tracks, this painting captures the essence of travel in 1850. The artist's attention to detail allows us to immerse ourselves in this historical scene; we can almost hear the hiss of steam and feel the excitement that filled these platforms. The North Midland Railway, formed during the early 1830s, connected Derbyshire's vibrant city of Derby with Yorkshire's thriving Leeds. In 1844, it joined forces with other railway companies to create what would become known as the mighty Midland Railway. Commissioned by George Dow, advertising manager for BR/LMR during the 1950s, this artwork was part of a series intended for carriage prints. It serves not only as a beautiful depiction but also as a reminder of Britain's rich railway heritage. As we gaze upon "The Old Station at Derby" let our imaginations wander through time and envision passengers eagerly awaiting their journeys or bidding farewell to loved ones. This remarkable piece invites us to appreciate how far we have come while honoring those who paved our way towards modern transportation systems.
