The Micheline - a train on pneumatic tyres

The Micheline - the first train on pneumatic tyres. In commercial use since 1931 - the birth of the Michelin Tyre. This example was run on the L.M.S. Line (Bletchley to Oxford) in 1932. Michelines offered unprecedented ride smoothness, but they soon proved to be problematic because the low load that the wheels could bear limited railcar sizes and demanded a high number of tyres (up to 20) per car. Furthermore, they were subject to flat tyres, unlike cars with steel wheels. The trains of the Paris metro (RATP) still run with rubber tyres

1932 Bletchley Michelin Midland Oxford Pneumatic Rails Rubber Track Tyre Tyres Wheels

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases The Micheline, the world's first train to run on pneumatic tyres, in commercial service on the L.M.S. (London, Midland and Scottish Railway) line between Bletchley and Oxford in 1932. The Micheline marked a significant milestone in railway history as the birthplace of the Michelin Tyre. Its innovative pneumatic wheels offered unparalleled ride smoothness, providing passengers with a more comfortable journey than ever before. However, the promise of the Micheline was not without its challenges. Due to the low load capacity of the pneumatic wheels, the size of the railcars was limited, necessitating a large number of tyres (up to 20) per car. Furthermore, the trains were susceptible to flat tyres, a problem not encountered with traditional steel-wheeled trains. Despite these issues, the Paris metro (RATP) continues to operate trains with rubber tyres to this day. The Micheline's legacy lies in its groundbreaking innovation, paving the way for advancements in railway technology and transportation history. This photograph, taken in 1932, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing a moment when the railway industry took a bold step towards progress and comfort.
