The General Strike - food convoys leaving docks

The last food convoy to leave the Royal Albert Docks before the termination of the General Strike. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical print captures a pivotal moment during the General Strike of 1926, as food convoys are seen leaving the Royal Albert Docks. The strike was called by the Trades Union Congress in support of coal miners who were facing threatened wage cuts. This particular convoy was the last to leave before the termination of the strike, which lasted only nine days. The image showcases the solidarity and determination of workers from key industrial sectors such as docks, electricity, gas, and railways coming together to protest against unfair treatment. Despite their efforts, government emergency measures and lack of public support ultimately led to the collapse of the strike. As we reflect on this important chapter in history, it serves as a reminder of the power that organized labor can have in fighting for workers' rights. The striking visuals captured in this photograph convey a sense of unity and resilience among those involved in this significant moment. This print is not just a snapshot from the past but a powerful symbol of perseverance and collective action that continues to inspire movements for social justice today.
